I wanted to share a few of my memories of Rabbi Rodal, both from when i was a camper and Head Counselor in CGI Kalkaska, Mich.
When i was a camper, I clearly remember a time when our bunk was feeling a bit “down”. Rabbi Rodal tuned into this right away and came up with a great plan. He told us that he would take us to visit his good friend Benyamin Franklin. We all laughed because we knew this was a funny name for the gift shop in town called Benjamin Franklin. It was just what we needed and I remember this until today!
I also remember that Rabbi Rodal organized a kickball game that we played against another camp in the area called Camp Seigal. This camp was a Jewish camp with non religious campers. It was very important to him that we make a Kiddush Hashem for those girls. I enjoyed the experience very much. When I went back several years later as a Head Counselor, I asked Rabbi Rodal if he could arrange that again. He was surprised that I had remembered this. He said it has been a while since he had contact with the camp. He arranged the kickball game and it was a success as I had remembered it.
Rabbi Rodal had an incubator with eggs that were going to hatch into chicks. I was up early one morning for the Cocoa club and I got to witness one of the chicks hatch! it was so cool! i have always wanted to do this with my classes over the years and I have not been brave enough. This year i am honored to teach one of Rabbi Rodal’s granddaughters, Chanale Rodal. I have been sharing a few funny stories with her about her grandfather. i plan to brave it out and bring the eggs in the incubator for my class before the end of the school yea iyh. It is my hope that they will enjoy it as much as I did way back when Rabbi Rodal put a smile on all of our faces. May his legacy continue through each and every one of his special children and grandchildren and may we merit to see Moshiach now!
